How much do you want to bet that there is much more to Nicaragua than just gallo pinto? I can go hours, days, no, an eternity mentioning the never-ending list of wonders this country has. Today, I will introduce you to one: Ramon Mejia, artistically known as Perrozompopo.
Just in case you haven’t had the opportunity to explore this artist, Perrozompopo is a musician that expresses his opinions and emotions with the core of honesty. His lyrics are primarily inspired and dedicated to his natal country and have much value because he narrates exactly how it is. Perrozompopo is without a doubt one of the highly respected artists in Nicaragua.
Following the success of albums “Romper el silencio” (2004) and “Quiero que sepas” (2007), “CPC (Canciones Populares Contestatarias)” is the third album released by the artist. The album demonstrates the every day struggle that people carry, it demonstrates the social-political situation, and demonstrate the changes that citizen’s desire. “CPC” is a production that captures hope, disillusion, love, morals, reality, rage, and in essence, Nicaraguan pride.
Perrozompopo’s music is fundamentally compounded of urban, rock, and a diverse mix of rhythms. “CPC” entirely gets you in different moods; your feelings will literally range from laid-back to vivacious. In order to grasp a better understanding of these incredible mood swings, “Busco” is one of the mellow toned and “Cancion Toxica” is one the vibrant songs that I recommend. Lyric wise, I admire the message he sends in all 12 tracks, but the one I favored the most is “Pasando mas”, a song devoted to the capital, Managua. The lyrics are brutally honest, just like most of his work, sin pelos en la lengua!
Perrozompopo with the support of Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (AECID) gave everyone the opportunity to download “CPC” online at www.perrozompopo.com. Reason being, according to PZ himself, most of the young adult population in Nicaragua do not have jobs or do not make enough money to purchase a CD, therefore, this is his ultimate gift to his family, friends, and fans. Consider this a great opportunity for Fabrikators to catch a glimpse.
Plans ahead? Perrozompopo will be launching his album on Feb. 5th in a free concert in Managua, where he will distribute a free copy to the first 1,500 people. In March, there is a pending tour in Spain, where he will also perform at the Barna Sants Festival in Barcelona (www.barnasants.com). Afterwards, he will give another debut concert in Costa Rica, where 1,500 copies will also be distributed.
It is inevitable that music runs through this mans blood. Perrozompopo is an exuberant artist, and due to the constant and unexpected changes in the country, “CPC” is not the last of him.
