Taking global beats up a notch!

For those unfamiliar with Novalima, they are a collective group from Lima, Peru which originated in 2001 by four musicians from Lima, Barcelona, London and Hong Kong.  They specialize in world beats, ranging from Afro-Peruvian, electronic, dub, Latin sounds and other global rhythms.  Novalima was nominated Best Alternative Album in the Latin Grammy for their release of Coba Coba. The group presents to us their third studio album, Karimba, which will be available on January 31st. Those familiar with Novalima, should know that this production ready to kick some Grammy-butt (again) this year!

3 Songs worth listening to:

  1. "Mamaye": If you listen to the lyrics closely, you will notice that Mamaye is a wise person whom they ask for advice; the first thing that pops to my head is Mother Willow.  The melody in this track travels from breakbeats to a lot of bewitching percussion and guira that will have you dancing in a heartbeat.
  2. "Macaco": First time I heard this song was during one of Mr. Pauer's sets and the phrase "tengo tres dias que no como, cuatro que no bebo agua" repeated in my head for a long time, until at last we meet again!  This is THE song that gets any party started, with its fusion of electronic, samba and even with some Latin jazz bits.
  3. "Hotel Barcelona":  This song apparently mocks a personal situation the group had at their staying in Spain.  Why would anyone complain about Novalima? Heck, I'd be dammed if they were my next door neighbors at a hotel, let alone one in Barcelona!  The guys clearly brushed off the complaint of those "par de señores enojados" with the mambo-salsa fiesta found in this track.
This album makes me want to: Quit work, quit school and travel the world (or simply just pre-order my copy of Karimba today!)
